Lewis Hamilton Winner of Barcelona GP – Perfect Timing Of Virtual Safety Car

Lewis Hamilton has done it. In one of the most dramatic races of the 2026 season, the Ferrari driver claimed his first victory in the Scuderia’s colours at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, and with it, his first win of the season.

It was not a straightforward afternoon. Hamilton was the first of the frontrunners to pit, swapping his soft tyres for hards and committing to a long final stint. For many laps the question hanging over the Ferrari garage was whether that strategy could hold to the end. It could, and then some, because fate stepped in to make it perfect.

On lap 41, Fernando Alonso stopped on track at Turn 9, bringing out the Virtual Safety Car. From the pits, Alonso was instructed to park the car safely as Hamilton was approaching behind him. For Mercedes, it was a disaster. For Ferrari, it was a gift. Hamilton was able to pit for a free tyre change under the VSC, emerging still in the lead and with fresh rubber underneath him. From that moment, the race was his.

The VSC was not the only drama. Earlier, Lance Stroll retired on lap 6 with a gearbox issue, continuing what has been a wretched season for Aston Martin. Valtteri Bottas was also out by lap 16. Nico Hülkenberg and Arvid Lindblad were under investigation in the opening laps for leaving the track and gaining an advantage at the first corner, though that investigation was later dropped. Hülkenberg would not see the end of the race either, retiring on lap 31 with a pointed message over team radio making clear his frustration. Alex Albon also retired, briefly returning to the track before being called back in on lap 45.

The closing stages brought chaos. Kimi Antonelli, running second and seemingly set for a solid points haul, suffered a mechanical failure on lap 62 and was forced to retire. Just two laps later, Charles Leclerc pulled over with hydraulic steering issues, ending what had been a difficult afternoon for the second Ferrari as well. Two retirements in the space of two laps — Barcelona turned from a Ferrari triumph into a reliability scare in a matter of minutes, with only Hamilton’s car making it to the end.

George Russell crossed the line in second for Mercedes, with Lando Norris completing the podium in third for McLaren.

The championship picture has shifted dramatically. Hamilton now sits on 115 points, while Antonelli’s DNF leaves him stranded on 156. The gap at the top is now just 41 points, with Russell only 9 points behind Hamilton in third place on 106. What looked like a processional Antonelli title run just a few hours ago is suddenly a three-way fight.

For Ferrari, the emotions at the end of this race are complicated. A historic first win for Hamilton in red, but Leclerc cars failing in the final laps raises serious questions about reliability going forward. The pit wall called the strategy perfectly, Hamilton delivered, but the Scuderia will want answers before the next race.
