F1 Australian GP – FP2 Highlights

Incidents & Drama

  • George Russell vs. Arvid Lindblad – Contact before either driver left the pits, with Russell clipping his front wing trying to maneuver in front of the Rookie. A frustrating and completely avoidable start to the session.
  • Max Verstappen – Double trouble for the four-time champion. His Red Bull conked out at the end of the pit lane and had to be wheeled back to the garage. He later had a hairy high-speed moment at Turn 10, losing the car but miraculously saving it – though not without shedding some carbon fiber.
  • Isac Hadjar – Verstappen’s teammate also struggled, wobbling through Turn 5 and cutting the grass at Turn 13, going miles off circuit and nearly collecting the barriers.
  • Franco Colapinto – The Alpine driver suffered a sudden loss of drive on the pit straight mid-lap, then later dipped a wheel onto the grass at Turn 3.
  • Hamilton & Leclerc – Both Ferrari drivers went off into the gravel at the same corner. Hamilton locked up badly and couldn’t scrub enough speed, with Leclerc repeating the mistake shortly after. A tailwind on that straight was noted as a contributing factor.

Performance

  • Oscar Piastri – The home hero topped the timesheets with a 1:19.729, beating the field by 0.2 seconds. The McLaren man is chasing history as he bids to become the first Australian to stand on the podium at his home Grand Prix.
  • Mercedes bounced back – After a subdued FP1, the Silver Arrows pushed hard and placed both Andrea Kimi Antonelli (P3) and Russell (P4) right behind Piastri – though both also had their own wild moments at Turn 3 and Turn 10.
  • Fernando Alonso – Positive news for Aston Martin: the Spaniard finally hit the track after missing FP1, completing 18 solid laps. Stroll added 13 more for the team.

Sergio Pérez was unable to complete even a single lap in his Cadillac.

Key Takeaway: Piastri looks quick at home, Mercedes have pace but both drivers need cleaner laps, and Verstappen’s reliability is once again raising eyebrows heading into qualifying.
