Max Verstappen’s Stunning Comeback: From 104 Points Down to Two Points Short

Max Verstappen’s 2025 season will be remembered as one of the greatest comebacks in Formula 1 history, even though it ultimately fell just short. The Dutch driver mounted an incredible late-season charge, closing a 104-point deficit to finish just two points behind champion Lando Norris.

After the Dutch Grand Prix in August, Verstappen trailed Norris by a seemingly insurmountable margin. Many had written off his championship chances. But Red Bull and Verstappen had other ideas, winning six of the final nine races.

Verstappen ended the season with eight race wins and eight pole positions – more than any other driver. His consistency and raw speed never wavered, but early-season struggles and McLaren’s dominant car proved too much to overcome entirely.

The comeback was aided by McLaren’s costly double disqualification in Las Vegas and a strategic error in Qatar that gifted Verstappen crucial points. These moments kept the championship alive heading into the Abu Dhabi finale.

“We’ve had a rollercoaster year,” Verstappen said after winning the season finale. “Especially at the beginning, but our team has shown we never give up.” Though he didn’t win a fifth consecutive title, his fighting spirit and determination earned universal respect across the paddock.
