Pre Race
Delay Race Start Postponed by 10 Minutes – Barrier Damage
The start of the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix has been delayed by 10 minutes. A barrier on the Suzuka circuit was damaged during a previous event incident and race officials have halted proceedings while repairs are carried out. All 22 drivers remain in the pit lane. The green light will not come until the track is declared safe.

Lap 1 · Lights Out
Race Start Lights Out – Mercedes Nightmare Off the Line
The 2026 Japanese Grand Prix is underway at Suzuka – and it’s an immediate disaster for Mercedes. Antonelli loses the lead from pole and Russell drops from P2, with both Silver Arrows swallowed up in the opening corners. Antonelli falls to P5, Russell to P6. From a front-row lockout to outside the top four in a matter of seconds. 53 laps to recover.

Lap 1
Leader Piastri Takes the Lead – McLaren Go P1 at Suzuka
Oscar Piastri storms through from P3 on the grid to lead the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix at the end of Lap 1. The Australian capitalises perfectly on the Mercedes collapse off the line. McLaren have the race lead at Suzuka – and with both Silver Arrows buried in the midfield, this could be a very long afternoon for Mercedes.
T
Lap 1 · Strategy
Tyres Field on Mediums – Bottas the Lone Hard Starter
All 22 drivers have taken the start on the Medium compound – except Valtteri Bottas, who rolls the dice on the Hard tyre for Cadillac. A classic undercut-proof strategy that will allow Bottas to run much longer before his first stop. Whether the Hard can come alive quickly enough at Suzuka remains to be seen, but it gives Cadillac a different strategic card to play as the race develops.
!
Lap 7
Battle Russell Right on Piastri – 0.5 Seconds the Gap
George Russell has recovered brilliantly from his disastrous start and is now right on the rear wing of Oscar Piastri. Just 0.5 seconds separating the Mercedes and the McLaren. Russell has DRS range and the pressure is firmly on the race leader. Piastri will need to defend very carefully through the next few laps at Suzuka.
FL
Lap 7 · Fastest Lap
Fastest Lap Russell Sets Fastest Lap – 1:34.469
George Russell clocks the fastest lap of the race so far with a 1:34.469 as he hunts down Piastri. The pace is there – the question is whether he can find a way past the McLaren.

Lap 8
Overtake Russell Takes the Lead – Mercedes Hit the Front
George Russell completes the move on Oscar Piastri and takes P1 at Suzuka. A stunning recovery drive from the Mercedes man who started the race buried in P6 after the disastrous getaway off the line. Seven laps to go from the back of the top six to the race lead. Piastri will not give up without a fight – this battle is far from over.
P1
Lap 9 · Last Chicane
Overtake Piastri Fights Back – Snatches the Lead Through the Last Chicane
Oscar Piastri refuses to let Russell go. The McLaren driver dives back through at the last chicane and reclaims P1 at the very start of Lap 9. An absolutely ferocious battle at the front of the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix. Two laps, two lead changes – Suzuka is delivering. These two are not done yet.
↓
Lap 9 · Audi
Fading Audi Having a Nightmare – Both Drivers Deep in the Field
While the lead battle captures the headlines, Audi are enduring a desperately difficult race at Suzuka. Both cars are haemorrhaging positions with no answers coming from the garage – a painful contrast to a qualifying that had given the team genuine optimism.

Lap 11 · Movers
Gainers Verstappen, Bearman & Ocon – Best Improvers Through 11 Laps
Three drivers stand out as the biggest movers through the opening phase of the race, each gaining three positions from their starting slot.

Lap 15
Failed Overtake Norris Goes for Leclerc – P3 Battle Heats Up
Lando Norris makes his move on Charles Leclerc, lunging from P4 in an attempt to steal third place. Leclerc defends well and holds the position. Norris is forced to back out and remains in P4. The battle between the McLaren and the Ferrari is very much alive – Norris will try again.
!
Lap 16
Move & Counter Antonelli Gets Past Leclerc – Charles Takes It Straight Back
Kimi Antonelli pulls off a stunning move to get past Charles Leclerc – but the Ferrari driver is having absolutely none of it. Leclerc immediately hits back and reclaims his position before the lap is done. A blink-and-you-miss-it moment at Suzuka. P3 stays with Leclerc, but Antonelli is right on his gearbox and this fight is nowhere near finished.
PIT
Lap 17
Pit Stop Norris Pits – McLaren Make Their First Move
Lando Norris heads into the pit lane on Lap 17. McLaren bring their second car in early – likely fresh Mediums or a switch to the Hard compound. After failing to pass Leclerc for P3 on Lap 15, the undercut could be the strategy to get him ahead. The pit stop window is now fully open. Others will be watching closely.
PIT
Lap 18
Pit Stop Leclerc Pits – Ferrari Respond to McLaren
Charles Leclerc heads into the pit lane one lap after Norris. Ferrari are reacting immediately – they cannot afford to let McLaren steal track position through the undercut. The pit stop window is now well and truly open at Suzuka. Piastri, Russell and Antonelli still out front – the question now is who blinks next at the top of the order.
PIT
Lap 19
Pit Stop Lindblad Pits – Racing Bulls Join the Pit Window
Arvid Lindblad heads into the pit lane on Lap 19, the third driver to stop in three consecutive laps. The Racing Bulls rookie had been running P10 after a strong qualifying that knocked Verstappen out in Q2. The pit window is now fully underway – Norris, Leclerc and Lindblad all in, the rest of the field will be watching their tyre data closely.
!
Lap 20
Gap Russell Falls 2.5 Seconds Behind Piastri
George Russell is losing ground to race leader Oscar Piastri. The gap has stretched to 2.5 seconds – a significant shift from the wheel-to-wheel battle they were fighting just ten laps ago. With the pit window in full swing around him, Russell will need to decide soon whether to stop and try to undercut, or push on and cover Piastri on the road.
PIT
Lap 20
Pit Stops Ocon & Hadjar Both Pit – Pit Lane Busy at Suzuka
Esteban Ocon and Isack Hadjar both head into the pit lane on the same lap. Five drivers have now stopped in the space of four laps – Norris, Leclerc, Lindblad, Ocon and Hadjar. The strategic picture is crystallising fast. Piastri, Russell and Antonelli remain the three drivers yet to stop at the front of the race.
PIT
Lap 20
Pit Stop Piastri Pits – Race Leader Makes His Move
Oscar Piastri comes in from the lead on Lap 20. McLaren have timed the stop to perfection – six drivers have now pitted this lap alone. Piastri rejoins behind Russell who remains out on track. The race lead effectively passes to Russell, but with fresher rubber Piastri will be hunting him down. The undercut battle between these two is now fully alive.
PIT
Lap 20
Pit Stops Colapinto & Bottas Pit – Lap 20 is the Busiest of the Race
Franco Colapinto and Valtteri Bottas both head into the pit lane, making Lap 20 the most active pit lap of the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix so far. Bottas switches off his Hard compound – his alternative strategy now fully played out. Colapinto comes in from P15. Russell is now the last of the front runners still out on track – all eyes on the Mercedes pit wall.

Lap 20
Mercedes 1-2 Russell & Antonelli Lead – Both Yet to Stop
With the pit window chaos settling, Mercedes find themselves running a stunning 1-2 at Suzuka. Russell leads, Antonelli sits second – and crucially neither has made their pit stop yet. They are running on older Mediums but holding the strategic high ground for now. Piastri and the rest are on fresher rubber and will be charging. The question is how long Mercedes can hold before they are forced to blink.
PIT
Lap 21
Pit Stop Russell Pits – Antonelli Inherits the Lead
George Russell finally comes into the pit lane on Lap 21, handing the race lead to teammate Kimi Antonelli. The 18-year-old now leads the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix – and is the last driver on track yet to make his stop. Antonelli is running on the oldest tyres of anyone at the front. Mercedes will need to time his stop to perfection to keep him in contention once he comes in.

DNF Bearman Crashes Out – Safety Car Deployed
Oliver Bearman is out of the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix. The Haas driver loses control and hits the barriers heavily at Suzuka – a massive impact that brings out the yellow flags immediately. Bearman climbs out of the car but is visibly limping. A huge relief that he is out and moving, but the extent of any injury is yet to be confirmed. A bitter end for a driver who had been one of the best improvers in the race.
Update · Haas Medical Statement
Haas confirm Bearman suffered a 50G impact in the crash. He has been taken for an X-ray and initial reports indicate no fractures have been found. A relief given the severity of the impact at Suzuka.

Safety Car Safety Car Out – Massive Strategic Shake-Up
The safety car is on track at Suzuka and this changes everything. Antonelli – who has yet to make his pit stop – can now come in for free under the safety car and rejoin with barely any time lost. Mercedes have been handed a golden opportunity. The entire field bunches up and the pit lane is about to get very busy very quickly.

Pit Stops Antonelli & All Remaining Drivers Dive Into the Pits
Kimi Antonelli takes the free pit stop gift handed to him by the safety car and comes in alongside every other driver yet to stop. The pit lane is absolutely packed. Antonelli rejoins having lost virtually nothing – a potentially race-winning call from Mercedes. Every team on the pit wall has played the safety car perfectly.
Russell – Furious on Team Radio
George Russell is livid. He pitted on Lap 21 just moments before the safety car came out – meaning he lost all his time in the pit lane the hard way while Antonelli got the same fresh tyres for free. Russell has been handed a significant disadvantage through no fault of his own, and he is making sure his engineers know exactly how he feels about it.

Lap 30
Fastest Lap Antonelli Smashes His Own Fastest Lap – 1:32.859
Kimi Antonelli is in a league of his own at Suzuka. The Mercedes driver sets a new fastest lap of the race on Lap 30 with a 1:32.859 – nearly a second quicker than his previous best set just two laps ago. Antonelli is pulling away at the front and the lap times suggest nobody in the field can live with him right now.

DNF Stroll Retires – Aston Martin Lose Their Second Car
Lance Stroll pulls the Aston Martin into the pit lane and retires from the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix. A tough afternoon for the Canadian who had been running deep in the field throughout. Aston Martin leave Suzuka pointless – and with serious questions to answer about the pace of their 2026 package.

Battle Russell vs Hamilton – P3 Fight Heats Up at Suzuka
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are locked in a fierce battle for third place on Lap 37. Two former Mercedes teammates now fighting hard on opposite sides of the garage – Russell in the Silver Arrow, Hamilton in the Ferrari. With 16 laps remaining there is plenty of time for this one to boil over. Russell will be desperate to make up for the misfortune of pitting just before the safety car. Hamilton will not give the position up without a fight.

Fading Russell Drops to P5 – Leclerc Goes Through, Car Issue Suspected
A dramatic collapse for George Russell on Lap 38. Having been fighting Hamilton for P3 just one lap ago, Russell is now being swallowed up by the field – Leclerc sweeps past to take P4, pushing Russell down to P5. The pace drop is sudden and severe, raising immediate questions about a possible car issue on the Mercedes. There has been no communication from the team yet but something does not look right. Russell will be furious – this has been a race full of misfortune for the number 63 car.
Under Investigation – Car Issue?
No confirmation yet from Mercedes on whether Russell has a mechanical problem. His lap times have dropped sharply and he is being passed with little resistance. The pit wall will be monitoring closely with 15 laps remaining.

Overtake Russell Does Exactly What Leclerc Did – Hamilton Passed Again

Lap 46 · Turn 16
Investigation Hamilton Under Investigation – Track Limits at Turn 16
Lewis Hamilton appears to have left the track at Turn 16 on Lap 46 and the FIA have opened an investigation. The key question is whether Hamilton gained a lasting advantage over Lando Norris behind him. If the stewards rule he did, he could be forced to hand the position back to Norris – or face a time penalty. With 7 laps remaining the clock is ticking on a decision that could shake up the final order.
Verdict – No Further Action
Stewards have closed the investigation with no penalty for Hamilton. He does not need to give the position back to Norris and stays in P5. The incident at Turn 16 is deemed not to have constituted a lasting advantage.

Lap 47 – 48
Pit Error Albon Pits Two Laps in a Row – Williams in Chaos
Alexander Albon heads into the pit lane on Lap 47 – and then comes straight back in again on Lap 48. Something has gone seriously wrong in the Williams garage. Albon is now the only driver in the entire race to have made three pit stops, a disastrous situation with just 5 laps remaining. The most likely explanation is that something was left on the car during the Lap 47 stop – a loose wheel gun fitting, an unsecured part or a forgotten component – forcing Williams to call him back in immediately. A deeply embarrassing moment for the team and a race completely ruined for Albon.
Williams Yet to Explain
No statement from Williams yet on what went wrong during the Lap 47 stop. Albon is the only driver in the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix to have made three pit stops. An investigation into the pit crew error is expected after the race.

Lap 49
4th Stop Albon Pits AGAIN – Four Pit Stops at Suzuka
This is extraordinary. Alexander Albon is back in the pit lane for the fourth time in this race. Three consecutive laps, three trips to the garage. Whatever is happening to the Williams cannot be fixed and Albon keeps being called back in. No other driver in this race has made more than one stop since the safety car period. Something is seriously, deeply wrong with the car and Williams have no answers. With just 4 laps remaining Albon’s race is a complete disaster – and the pit lane is becoming his second home at Suzuka.
Williams in Crisis
Four pit stops in a single race is almost unheard of in modern Formula 1. Williams have not explained what is happening to Albon’s car. Laps 47, 48 and now 49 – three stops in three laps. An unprecedented and humiliating situation for the team at Suzuka.

The Ferrari driver responds immediately on the very next corner, taking the position straight back. One turn to lose it, one turn to regain it. Leclerc holds P3, Russell drops back to P4. A breathtaking exchange between two of the best drivers in the field – and with 2 laps left there is still time for another attempt from Russell.

6 Stops Albon Pits Again. And Again. Six Pit Stops. SIX.
There are no words. Alexander Albon has now made six pit stops at the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix. Six. He has spent more time in the Williams garage today than on the actual circuit. Laps 20, 47, 48, 49, 50 and now 51 – every single lap in the closing stages Albon has returned to the pit lane. Whatever is wrong with this car Williams cannot fix it. This is one of the most chaotic and baffling pit stop sequences in the modern history of Formula 1. With 2 laps to go Albon is simply circulating at this point – a race that has become a mechanical nightmare with no end in sight.
Williams – No Explanation
Six pit stops across six consecutive laps. Williams have given no explanation to media. A full post-race investigation is inevitable. This will go down as one of the strangest pit stop stories in F1 history.
