Formula 1’s driver market has caught fire in the middle of the 2026 season, with two separate storylines now colliding: reports that Oscar Piastri could break his McLaren contract, and growing evidence that Max Verstappen’s camp has held real discussions with McLaren about a possible switch.
Piastri’s Exit Clause
Piastri signed a new deal with McLaren through 2028, but that contract reportedly contains a release clause tied to his championship position. According to multiple reports, Piastri can activate the clause if he is outside the top five in the drivers’ standings at the 2026 summer break, which follows the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 24-26. He currently sits in fifth place, meaning his position is far from secure heading into the final rounds before the break.
Red Bull has been named as a serious suitor, with the team reportedly viewing Piastri as a possible long-term replacement for Verstappen if the four time champion decides to leave. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has pushed back on the exit talk, insisting Piastri is happy and performing at his best, and that speculation is simply part of F1’s “silly season.”
Verstappen and McLaren
At the same time outlets have reported that Verstappen’s management team initiated informal talks with McLaren CEO Zak Brown during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend. Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull through 2028, but his deal is believed to include an exit clause allowing him to leave for 2027 if he is outside the top two in the standings by a date during the summer break. With three race weekends remaining before that deadline, Verstappen sits seventh in the championship, well outside the required position.
One factor fueling the McLaren links is race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, who worked closely with Verstappen at Red Bull for years and is expected to join McLaren, possibly as team principal, from 2028. That long standing relationship has made McLaren a more credible destination than it might otherwise have been.
Brown has not ruled anything out. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said he would be surprised if Norris or Piastri left the team, but acknowledged that Verstappen’s status as a four time world champion makes him impossible to ignore. Norris, when asked about the rumors, joked that plenty of drivers want to join McLaren and that he would welcome the chance to race alongside more top level competition.
Verstappen himself has declined to confirm or deny the talks. Speaking at Silverstone, he told reporters that any changes to his future would come directly from him and not through media reports, while adding that his focus remains on improving with Red Bull following a stronger showing in Austria.
What Comes Next
Both storylines hinge on the same date: the summer break after the Hungarian Grand Prix. If Piastri’s position slips further and Verstappen fails to climb into the top two, both drivers could technically be free to negotiate with rivals for 2027, setting up one of the most unpredictable driver markets in recent F1 history. Until then, McLaren insists its current lineup remains its priority, even as rumors around both seats continue to build.
